The flame sensor is a small metal rod positioned near the burner assembly inside a gas furnace. Its job is to confirm that a flame is actually present after ignition. It sends a tiny electrical signal back to the control board, and if that signal weakens or disappears, the board assumes something is wrong and shuts off gas flow as a safety precaution.
Over time, a thin layer of carbon or dust can coat the sensor rod. That coating acts like an insulator, weakening the signal even though a flame is genuinely burning. This is why a furnace can appear to work for a few seconds before shutting down, then repeat the cycle.
Common Signs of a Dirty Flame Sensor
These patterns tend to show up gradually and often get worse the longer a furnace runs without attention.
The burner ignites, runs for a few seconds, and then shuts down on its own, often repeating this pattern several times before giving up.
You may hear the furnace click, ignite, and shut off multiple times in a row as the control board keeps trying to establish a stable flame signal.
A healthy flame is usually steady; a flickering or unusually small flame near the sensor rod can point to buildup interfering with combustion or detection.
If the blower keeps running after the burner shuts off, you may notice cool or lukewarm air blowing through vents between heating cycles.
As buildup worsens, the furnace may go into a full lockout state more often, requiring a manual reset before it will attempt to ignite again.
